Watching the Drunken Display

Illustration
Project Overview
I was tasked with creating a group reaction to an event or spectacle that was happening outside of the composition. This project required me to utilize my knowledge of the human figure, perspective, composition, and color theory to create a cohesive illustration that satisfied the requirements.
The End Product
This project was completed in about 30 hours total. It allowed me to exercise my skills and play with composition, human expression, and environment design. In the end, I created a successful illustration that showcases a variety of human figures in both their body language and their expressions. The color palette is united through the similar levels of saturation, and the eye travels through the composition through the use of lighting and the implied line created by the bodies of the characters.
One of my favorite projects I’ve worked on, this illustration was to show a group of figures reacting to something that doesn’t occur in the frame. I chose to go with a tavern environment for my illustration, and used this project as an opportunity to showcase a diverse set of characters interacting with their surroundings while reacting to what I've dubbed "a drunken display". I had three ideas to begin with, a cathedral, a campsite, and a tavern.

After I cemented my idea to go forward with a tavern, I created a rough sketch for each of the elements: the figures, the tables and chairs, and the background. After getting feedback from my peers, I added more detail into my environment by adding chandeliers, and framing on the walls. Moving into line art, I added more detail to the bar with more objects and took away some from the foreground to help the composition’s implied line. Coloring this was probably my favorite part, seeing each of the characters come to life through their color palettes added so much to the final composition.
